Natural Water Is the Method to Relieve Dry Eye

The First Step, When Eyes Feel Dry and Dehydrated, Should Be to Make Sure Your Tear Film Has Enough Water, Says Bio-Logic Aqua Research Founder Sharon Kleyne

"Dry eye disease, or dehydration of the ocular tear film, is becoming a global crisis that could lead to eye discomfort, loss of productivity, visual impairment and even blindness. New research is proving that two of the most important factors in maintaining a healthy tear film are water and diet. These are also the most overlooked factors."
Sharon Kleyne

In a recent interview, eye health and water advocate Sharon Kleyne noted that the delicate tear film covering the eyes' exposed portions is 99% water. When dry eye symptoms are experienced, according to Mrs. Kleyne, the initial steps should always be to make sure you drink enough water and are eating eye healthy foods.

Sharon Kleyne is host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water syndicated radio show, and founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research.

Mrs. Kleyne is concerned that the importance of water in any medical treatment, including dry eye, tends to be either minimized or overlooked. She advocates the inclusion of water on the list of necessary nutrient that are fundamental to all life.

According to Mrs. Kleyne, the human body is 60% to 70% water, the brain is 80% water, lean muscle is 75% water, blood is 70% water and body fat is 10% water (ChemCraft, 1998). Skin is 68% water and the ocular tear film, which protects eyes and vision in the absence of skin, is 99% water, making eyes especially vulnerable to dehydration.

"From the moment of birth," says Mrs. Kleyne, "when an infant first opens its eyes to the world, the body begins losing water, beginning with the eyes. Research could discover that because eyes are closely connected to the brain, tear film dehydration could cause anxiety, stress and depression."

Mrs. Kleyne believes that eye hydration - the addition of natural water to the tear film - is systematically overlooked in dry eye treatment around the world. She notes that on the majority of websites dealing with dry eye and computer eye strain, there is no mention of natural tear film moisture (water) supplementation. Mrs. Kleyne advocates the inclusion of eight to ten glasses of water per day, as a basic nutritional requirement for eye and body health, on the official U.S. Government "Food Pyramid" (now called the "Food Plate").

The ocular tear film, Mrs. Kleyne explains, lubricates the eyelids, refracts and transmits light, protects the eye from disease and supplies water and oxygen to live corneal cells. Insufficient tear production, or too rapid tear film water evaporation, are responsible for tear film dehydration, dry eye symptoms, eye allergies, computer eye strain and many other eye problems. Dry eye symptoms include itching and burning eyes, blurred vision, eye strain and fatigue, headache, increased stress levels and disturbed sleep (Mathers, 2005).

A fundamental step in assuring a well hydrated tear film is to drink eight to ten glasses of water each day. Also important are eye-healthy foods such as dark green leafy vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids. Sleep is vital because tear film water is restored while you sleep. Knowing how to protect the tear film in high risk situations (or knowing how to avoid such situations) such as wind, extreme heat or cold, solar radiation, extensive computer use, sports participation, fluorescent lighting, exposure to forced-air heating and cooling, etc., is also critical (more dry eye prevention tips).
