Sharon Cowin Kleyne Internationally Recognized Water and Health Advocate, Entrepreneur and Educator

Mission statement

Terrestrial life on Earth depends for survival on water in the ground and water vapor in the air. However, a basic physical law is that water evaporates, including the life-giving water in the human body.

Early in her career, Sharon Kleyne became concerned that Earth's atmospheric water vapor - the "breath of life" upon which living organisms depend - is becoming contaminated and unhealthy. Changes in atmospheric vapor content influence weather, long-term climate, air quality and health. The recent trend towards warmer, dryer and more polluted air - both outdoors and indoors - has increased the rate of water evaporation from eyes and skin. The result is a worldwide dehydration crisis.

Sharon Kleyne has made it her personal mission to educate the public about this crisis and to find ways to empower each individual, no matter where in the world they live, to compensate and adapt.

Sharon Cowin Kleyne

Sharon Kleyne is Founder, Chairman and Research Director of Bio Logic Aqua Research, the first woman-owned company in the global business of fresh water and health research and technology. The Research Center specializes in personal portable hand-held 100% fresh water humidifying devices that add supplemental water vapor to dehydrated skin and eyes. Mrs. Kleyne believes that climate change, air pollution and dry air have become a global health crisis but that each individual, with education, has the power to become proactive and to adapt. This will save lives.

Personal and business background

Sharon Kleyne has resided in southern Oregon for her entire life, including 50 years in Grants Pass, in the beautiful Rogue River Valley. Kleyne's rustic, 70-year old house, and the 40-acre Bio-Logic Aqua Research campus, both have Rogue River frontage and are passed each summer by thousands of tourists on jet boat river tours.

Kleyne became committed to health care while in her twenties, after her election as President of the local American Cancer Society where she oversaw the medical and lay Boards of Directors. At age 26, Kleyne was elected to the statewide ACS Educational Board.

Kleyne was also Founder and Chairman of the local Hospital Auxiliary, President of the local American Field Service Scholarship Exchange and Founder of the Save a Child's Life Foundation for prevention of and education about childhood melanoma.

In 1963, Sharon married Willem Kleyne, who was born in Utrecht, Netherlands. The couple spent many years as successful real estate investors. They have three daughters and eight grandchildren.

Bio-Logic Aqua Research.

In 1989, confident in her mission, research ideas and management skills, and concerned about dry air, health and the global contamination of atmospheric water vapor, Kleyne and her husband founded Bio-Logic Aqua Research. She was encouraged and assisted, usually at no cost, by internationally recognized economists, business leaders, physicians, and icons in the cosmetics, skin care and eye care industries, who shared her vision.

Kleyne's brother, Ron Cowin, a Wharton educated Economist who served on the Conference Board was particularly helpful. Cowin stressed the importance of written business plans and the protection and documentation of intellectual property. Cowin served on the Research Center's Board of Directors until his passing.

Don Gibb, Founder of Home Valley Bank in Grants Pass, was also extremely helpful, as were Bill Smullin, Founder of Oregon and California Broadcasting and owner of Oregon's first commercial TV station; Christian Bardin, former International President of Neutrogena; Dr. Stephen Hull, a Eugene, Oregon, Dentist; and Don Dennis, whose family was a Founder of the Best Western motel chain. .

Mrs. Kleyne has raised several million dollars in investment in technology and clinical trials, and generated several million dollars in retail sales in United States test marketing to prove the value of the Research Center's intellectual property.

Protected IP categories include proprietary research and development findings, technologies, market research, patents, registered trademarks, copyrights and clinical trials. Areas of IP interest include products and marketing, moisture absorption, atmospheric water vapor, fresh water research and technology, bottling and mist dosing technology, and the Research Center's Trade Secret water as the basis for supplemental water vapor for dehydrated skin and eyes, applied with a personal hand-held humidifying device.

At Bio-Logic Aqua Research, Sharon Kleyne is Chairman of the Board, Chief Administrative Officer and Research Director. Willem Kleyne is CEO and head of packaging, shipping, the Trade Secret water, international compliance and implementation of the Founder's discoveries and technologies. .

As the only global Research Center of its kind, security and confidentiality receive the highest possible priority.

Through the decades, Sharon Kleyne and Bio-Logic Aqua Research have not strayed from the global mission of personal proactive empowerment through public education about the human body's need for water, the importance of atmospheric water vapor, dry air and air pollution, and the health effects of the global dehydration crisis. Scientists around the world who share this concern have provided assistance and expert consultation, often for no pay.

Bio-Logic Aqua Research is the only water technology company in the skin and eye care industry that focuses on atmospheric water vapor and dehydration as causes of dry skin and dry eyes. Bio-Logic Aqua Research is the only company in these industries in partnership with a Climatologist and Atmospheric Scientist. Former NASA-NOAA Researcher DeWayne Cecil, PhD , holds this position.

Retail marketing is achieved through worldwide product licensing partnerships

Nature's Mist® Face of the Water®

The initial Bio-Logic Aqua Research product, Nature's Mist® Face of the Water®, a personal hand-held humidifying device for dry skin, proved immediately successful. Initial nationwide accounts included Nordstrom and Meier and Frank, plus Fred Meyer, a large regional chain. Soon after, nationwide accounts were obtained in the cosmetic departments of high-end stores such as Bergdorf-Goodman, Neiman Marcus and I Magnin.

To promote Nature's Mist®, Kleyne made numerous personal appearances nationwide, lecturing on skin care and dry air. Kleyne also produced a TV infomercial and was covered by the AP, newspapers and magazines.

The only slight competition was the French company Evian, whose skin spray utilized their mineralized drinking water. Evian spray has an alkaline pH and did not supplement lost water in dry and dehydrated skin. Evian had no apparent interest in the health effects of dry air, low atmospheric water vapor or air pollution. Their skin spray claimed only to "refresh."

Sharon Kleyne responded to Evian by educating the public that the Trade Secret tissue culture grade water in Nature's Mist® is intended specifically for external moisturizing and is not merely an offshoot of a beverage water business. The water in Nature's Mist® has a slightly acidic, skin compatible pH of 6.49 (Evian's is an alkaline 7.2). Human skin has a slightly acidic pH of 5.5 to 6.5.

External moisture supplementation with trade secret tissue grade water is Bio-Logic Aqua Research's only business.

In 1990, Kleyne gave well received lectures on Wall Street and at the New York Men's Athletic Club. Her topic was the future or water as a commodity business,

Numerous international cosmetic industry legends freely offered their priceless advice and consultation. The group included Revlon Founder and former President Harry Doyle, former L'Oreal CEO and Revlon President Arne Zimmerman, Millicent Congden-Doyle who was on the Board of Directors of Harper's Bazaar, and I Magnin's Van Vanneri, a cosmetic industry legend. Facial plastic surgeon Steven Gugenheim, MD, proved invaluable as head of the Research Center's Medical Advisory Team at that time.

Kleyne's emphasis on natural moisture replacement applied through the skin surface reassured the cosmetics industry that Nature's Mist® was not competition but a compatible add-on to their moisture sealing lotions.

As a first-of-its-kind global business, Kleyne's strategy for long-term growth and sustainability has been to emphasize intellectual property values, atmospheric and health research, new technologies, patents, research, product development, education, media presence, and outreach to the medical community, rather than short-term market penetration.

Nature's Tears® EyeMist®

The Nature's Mist® rollout attracted the interest of Ophthalmology Research Associates in Florida. They approached Kleyne regarding a similar application configured for eyes. The doctors expressed concern about a growing crisis in water evaporation at the surface of the eye as a result of changing atmospheric conditions. Dehydrating atmospheric conditions affects the eyes first, when eyelids are open, and then the skin.

Kleyne and the Research Center studied the eyes for a year, during which the Florida group put her in touch with Oregon Health and Sciences University's Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon.

Kleyne's research into dry air, atmosphere water vapor and dehydration diseases of the eye led to an urgent humanitarian concern for the 5,000 children who die each day from water

related causes, for the 1.6 billion people who lack safe and sufficient water for drinking, sanitation and agriculture. This concern turned Nature's Tears® EyeMist® into a global humanitarian mission as well as a business.

Once again, Kleyne sought and obtained consultation and assistance at the highest level. The Nature's Tears® EyeMist® group included noted dry eye researcher William Mathers, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology at Oregon Health and Sciences University's Casey Eye Institute. Mathers' contributions were immense and invaluable. Also invaluable was Philip Paden, MD, owner of the Paden Eye Care Center and Chairman of the Research Center's Medical Advisory Team. Marguerite McDonald, MD, an Ophthalmologist who performed the world's first laser eye surgery, was also extremely supportive.

Nature's Tears® EyeMist® was launched as the first personal hand-held humidifying device emitting a pure, pH balanced, 100% water mist for dry eyes. The company retained well known patent attorney Howard Eisenberg, who obtained a patent pending and later a full US patent on the application of a 100% water mist to relieve dry eyes. This was the first patent ever issued on the technology of fresh water application for the health of the eyes. The Research Center since received numerous patent approvals globally.

Nature's Tears® EyeMist® received the endorsement of thousands of Ophthalmologists and Optometrists nationwide. Following initial market testing, thousands of stores accounts were acquired, including most large drug chains in nearly every major US city. Market testing and sales were bolstered by national TV commercials, media coverage, physician outreach, medical trade shows and public education.

Early Nielsen ratings of store sales revealed that sales of Natures Tears® EyeMist® were 36% higher than any other vision care product.

Bio Med Wash®

The third product rollout was Bio Med Wash®, a personal hand-held first aid device for emergency eye irrigation and wound washing. There is a patent pending on this innovative, life saving concept. In an eye injury, the product allows the irrigating wash to be applied sooner. The subject is not obliged to stand at a plumbed eye wash fountain for 15 minutes but is free to seek medical assistance. Bio Med Wash® is used by the US military, the Oregon State Police, the NYPD, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, workers in the Canadian oil fields and numerous first response organizations. Because Bio Med Wash does not inhibit movement and does not burn or blur one's vision, it has been said that the product would have saved lives in the 9/11/2001 attacks, where many people attempting to flee were blinded by fumes, heat and smoke.

Co-Founder Willem Kleyne and Dave Naylor, Founder of Aramsco, an industrial first-aid supplier, were instrumental to the success of Bio Med Wash®.

Global future

Bio-Logic Aqua Research has global licensing partners in the United States, Canada and South Korea, with partnerships soon to be announced in China, Japan and the Middle East.

Personal hand-held humidifying devices are in development for 22 additional products, with specific technology for burn centers, surgery, dermatology, dry mouth, etc. The Research Center continues to receive requests from physicians for new products and applications utilizing the Trade Secret water. The Research Center is also studying the feasibility of a chain of hydrotherapy clinics to provide supervised hydration therapy and educate the medical field and public on skin and eye care.
