China Seniors Adapt Better than Youth to Carbon Black Pollution Reports Health Researcher

Interview with Shanhong Lu, MD, PhD on Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water

Senior citizens in China, because they grew up in a healthier environment, may be better adapted than younger people to serious health challenges such as carbon black air pollution. The observation was reported by Shanhong Lu, MD, PhD and founder of Mt. Shasta Integrative Medicine in Mt. Shasta, CA. Dr. Lu was interviewed on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water on June 24, 2013.

Dr. Lu's practice combines Western medicine with the traditional Chinese healing arts focusing on achieving health through balance and wellness rather than rescue remedies. Dr. Lu, who grew up in China, is author of Vibrant Life: Restoring the Roots of Health (2013).

Dr. Lu first observed this trait of the elderly when she visited her 89 year old father in China. She had a difficult time coping with the extreme air pollution, especially the high concentration of carbon black particles from burning coal. Her eyes and throat constantly felt dry and irritated. Dr. Lu's father was virtually unaffected and he has experienced almost none of the eye and lung problems faced by younger people in China as a result of carbon black pollution.

This apparent senior immunity, according to Dr. Lu, occurs because younger people in China, and presumably elsewhere, have grown up exposed to a greater number of environment toxins, such as carbon black, than senior citizens. The air is dirtier than it used to be, the water is more polluted, food may now be genetically altered and people are exposed to far more chemical in the air, in foods and in medications. Because Dr. Lu's senior citizen father grew up in an era of fewer environmental toxins and far less carbon black, his body has retained a greater ability to adapt and cope.

In the United States, Sharon Kleyne had discovered, people are trending to move away from Western Medicine and more towards the traditional holistic approach practiced in China for thousands of years. In China, the opposite is true and younger people are paying a price.
