As a diet, health and lifestyle advocate, radio talk show host Sharon Kleyne has long been interested in innovative approaches to chronic pain (lasting longer than three months). For this reason, on February 20, 2012, Mrs. Kleyne's guest on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water was Daniel Twogood, Chiropractor, pain specialist and author of Chronic Pain Gone in 90 Days (Wilhelmina Books, 2011). Sharon Kleyne's interview with Dr. Twogood may be heard on-demand on World Talk Radio, Voice America, Green Talk Network and Apple iTunes.

Estimates on the number of people, worldwide, living with chronic pain run as high as 21% of the population. These individuals not only suffer pain but may suffer from depression and an inability, or lessened ability, to earn a living (Wikipedia, 2012). Research indicates that an estimated 26 million Americans between age 20 and 64 suffer from chronic back pain (Ivanhoe, 2012).

Dr. Twogood and Sharon Kleyne agreed that diet and lifestyle changes that improve overall health could have a significant impact on chronic pain. Dr. Twogood avoids the word "chronic" because it implies that the condition will never get better and he believes that under the right circumstances, the human body can usually heal itself. Chronic pain, according to Dr. Twogood, is mostly chemical, not physical. Inflammation and pain transmission are chemically based and can be effected by the presence in the body of toxins and allergens, and by a deficient diet.

Both Sharon Kleyne and Dr. Twogood strongly advocate "proactive self-help" in which each individual takes responsibility for learning as much as they can about their own health issues, and then takes action. If they consult a physician, they should study on their own and actively participate in formulating their treatment plan. Mrs. Kleyne emphasized that no two people are completely alike and that nobody knows your own body better than you do.

Dr. Twogood described a list of common dietary substances known to contribute to chronic pain. Topping the list was cow's milk and cow milk based dairy products. Milk curds contain an especially harmful substance called "casein" (the original main ingredient in Elmer's Glue). Casein is also present in a few non-dairy products.

Second on the list is chocolate (although dark chocolate is known to lower cholesterol). Third is MSG (monosodium glutamate), a sodium based flavor enhancer used extensively in Chinese food and in most processed foods. Fourth is gluten, present in nearly all grains, but especially in wheat.

In fifth place on Dr. Twogood's list is prescription pain medication, which he claims can be addictive and toxic, and can prevent true healing by masking pain. He also recommends avoiding sugar and being very cautious about the long-term use of cholesterol medication.

As a general rule, Dr. Twogood recommends "foods without labels," such as fresh produce or food purchased in bulk or at a growers market. He also recommends eggs, meat in moderation, rice and beans purchased dry. He recommends drinking only water.

Sharon Kleyne noted, and Dr. Twogood agreed, that adequate daily water intake is critical to healthy body functioning and to flushing out body toxins. Mrs. Kleyne recommends a minimum of eight glasses of water per day.
