Summer is the season for solar radiation and sunburn. Summer is also when most malignant melanomas, the deadliest of all skin cancers, get started. While the incidence of most cancers has dropped, melanoma has risen 200% since 1973, according to a recent CBS News/Yahoo article (July 30, 2014). Despite the 200% rise, reports Sharon Kleyne, host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water radio show, melanoma can be prevented by education about the disease, avoiding summer sun exposure and keeping skin hydrated.

The globally syndicated Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water® radio show, with host Sharon Kleyne, is heard on VoiceAmerica and Apple iTunes. Kleyne is also Founder of Bio-Logic Aqua Research, a research, technology and product development center and the only company specializing globally in fresh water, atmosphere and health. Bio-Loigc Aqua products include Natures Tears® EyeMist®, a 100% pure water mist for dry eyes, and Nature's Mist® Face of the Water® for dry skin.
Kleyne, who has been educating the public on the dangers of sun exposure for decades, believes that attributing melanoma and other skin cancers to sun bathing and tanning is an over simplification. With a warming global climate, widespread drought and possible ozone layer depletion, says Kleyne, the amount of direct solar radiation reaching the ground, particularly ultraviolet or UV radiation, is increasing. Because solar radiation is becoming less filtered by the atmosphere, it is stronger and potentially more harmful.
Malignant melanoma, according to Kleyne, is a sneaky disease. That's why it's so important to understand how melanoma works. A severe sunburn in childhood can cause permanent genetic damage to the skin that may result in melanoma 50 years later. Once a melanoma lesion is established, the cancer can progress very quickly.
Any area of the body, says Kleyne, that has freckled as a result of sunburn, peeled several times because of sunburn, or has been severely or repeatedly burned or tanned should be watched carefully for melanoma lesions.
Melanoma is easily identified. Any skin growth that is larger than a pencil eraser; black, dark brown or multi-colored; or has an irregular edge, should be shown to a doctor immediately.
The best way to prevent melanoma, says Kleyne, is to avoid solar and UV radiation. If exposure is unavoidable, take measures to protect yourself. Stay indoors in summer if possible. When outside, wear protective clothing, a hat and sunglasses. Apply high SPF sunscreen - summer or winter - to any skin area that might be exposed to direct solar or UV radiation. Avoid excessive tanning.
Kleyne emphasizes that covering up in the sun and applying sunscreen is especially important with children. With a toddler or infant, according to Kleyne, direct solar radiation can also cause severe dehydration.
Proper hydration is vital to avoiding skin damage from the sun and maintaining skin health, according to Kleyne. Solar radiation is dehydrating to the skin surface. In Kleyne's experience, well hydrated skin is less likely to burn and heals faster when it does burn. Less severe and faster healing burns, say Kleyne, reduces the possibility of genetic damage that can lead to melanoma years later. .
Nature's Tears® EyeMist® and Nature's Mist® Face of the Water®, from Kleyne's Bio-Logic Aqua Research, are both personal hand held eye and skin humidifying devices whose all-water mist can be beneficial in maintaining skin moisture during solar radiation exposure and when treating a sunburn. Kleyne notes that traditional "moisturizing" lotions do hot add water to the skin but can be helpful in preventing skin dehydration.
