The Affordable Health Care Act, more often called ObamaCare, will not reduce the cost of health insurance, says Texas physician and hospital Administrator Lawrence Gelman, MD. In addition, says Dr. Gelman, the law represents an encroachment on our freedom of choice and is part of a general trend in the US towards increased government control over our lives and an erosion of personal initiative and responsibility.

Dr. Gelman is also a conservative activist and radio talk show host (KURV, the "Talk Back Radio Network" on the Internet). An Anesthesiologist, he Co-Founded the Doctor's Hospital in Edinburg, Texas (in the Rio Grande valley at the state's extreme southern tip, near McAllen). Dr. Gelman was interviewed by Sharon Kleyne on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water syndicated radio show on January 7, 2013. According to Dr. Gelman, the Affordable Health Care Act is an extension of two existing government controlled health insurance programs, Medicare (for senior citizens) and Medicaid (for the poor and disabled). This means it is inefficient, politicized, anti-free market and prone to massive corruption and waste. Dr. Gelman believes that health care in the United States is the best in the world because it has been able to respond to the free market.

In a government controlled system, Dr. Gelman explained, what he calls "parasites" or "takers" will eventually outnumber the "producers" and everything the producers create will be confiscated. Furthermore, According to Dr. Gelman most people prefer to be lazy, take no risks, spend most of their time having fun and having the government take care of them.

Dr. Gelman traces the Affordable Health Care Act (ObamaCare) back to Franklin Roosevelt and the Social Security Act of 1934, and to Lyndon Johnson's Medicare Act of 1964. He considers ObamaCare as the next step on the road to European "cradle to grave" Socialism, which works only until the government run out of money because there are no more producers.

The objective, Dr. Gelman warns, is not "fairness" or "humanitarianism," as the government claims, but to create permanent dependent class. To change this, Americans need to change their government. Unfortunately, the dependent class may now constitute a voting majority.

Dr. Gelman noted the progression in the US towards socialized - or at least corporatized - medicine. One-half of all physicians are now employees of a hospital, government facility or corporation.

Can this be changed? Dr. Gelman says "yes" but acknowledges that this is unlikely. To make health care competitive yet affordable, he would have the government give every citizen a health care voucher regardless of income. That would create an immediate 30% saving and drastically change the current system in which the insured pay not only for themselves but for everyone who is uninsured.

Dr. Gelman and Sharon Kleyne agreed that as patients, we all need to be proactive, take charge of our own health and not be controlled by our doctors. They both acknowledged a trend away from prevention and towards having the doctor fix whatever they do wrong.

With the government providing free contraceptives and paying for prenatal and postnatal care, Sharon Kleyne and Dr. Gelman agreed that not only is the ability to be proactive eroding but so is personal responsibility and, inevitably, morals. According to Dr Gelman, an immoral, self-absorbed, self-worshipping society will eventually decay from within and go the way of ancient Rome. He noted that the 13 year old girl who was shot by the Taliban because she wanted an education, was shot with an American made gun.
