Part 1 of 2

The Affordable Health Care Act, sometimes called ObamaCare will not reduce the cost of health insurance, says Texas physician and hospital Administrator Lawrence Gelman, MD. In addition, says Dr. Gelman, the law represents an encroachment on our freedom of choice and is part of a general trend in the US towards increased government control of our lives and an erosion of personal initiative and personal responsibility.

Dr. Gelman is also a conservative activist and radio talk show host (KURV, the "Talk Back Radio Network" on the Internet). An anesthesiologist, he Co-Founded Doctor's Hospital in Edinburg, Texas (in the Rio Grande valley at the state's extreme southern tip, near McAllen). Dr. Gelman was interviewed by Sharon Kleyne on the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water syndicated radio show on January 7, 2013. The Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water is sponsored by Nature's Tears® EyeMist® for dry eye.

According to Dr. Gelman, the Affordable Health Care Act is basically an extension of two existing government sponsored health insurance programs, Medicare (for senior citizens) and Medicaid (for the poor and disabled). This means it is inefficient, politicized and prone to massive corruption.

Dr. Gelman believes that health care in the United States is the best in the world because it has been able to respond to the free market. Free market competition keeps costs down. Government encroachment drives costs up. With a health care system such as ObamaCare, in which the government controls everything, costs are paid through taxes, which must go up to pay for it. The inevitable result is doctors quitting the business and therefore too many patients chasing too few doctors.

This means rationing. Rationing of health care in socialist Europe is one reason why many people there often seek health care in the US. An MRI or CATT scan in England requires a wait of at least several months. In the US, the wait is far shorter and in an emergency, the scan can usually be done immediately. It took Europe 60 years of Socialism to get where it is today.

Dr. Gelman and Sharon Kleyne contend that overreaching government is perpetuated by an ill-informed and unmotivated citizenry. Good information in 2013 is still available but often must be searched out because many important issues are not covered by major news sources. According to Dr. Gelman, government is never "for the people" and nobody in government truly represents "average Americans." The purpose of government, he says, is to perpetuate power, line the pockets of politicians and their cronies, and control the people. The political aristocracy in the US today is no different than royal aristocracies in 19th Century Europe.

This is happening, according to Dr. Gelman, because people allow it. People would rather "keep up with the Kardashians" than educate themselves about complex issues.

Dr. Gelman noted that the United States Congress has not passed a budget in four years and that President Obama is running things more and more by executive order rather than going through Congress. He believes that individualism in disappearing, free markets are disappearing, the constitution is disappearing and the intelligentsia is disappearing.

In a government controlled system, Dr. Gelman explained, what he calls "parasites" will eventually outnumber the producers and everything the producers do will be confiscated. Furthermore, According to Dr. Gelman most people prefer to be lazy, take no risks, spend most of their time having fun and having the government control everything and take care of them.

Sharon Kleyne compared the situation in the US with the Biblical Israelites, when their backs were against the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army was charging. The majority of the people begged Moses to return them to Egypt ("It would be better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert." Exodus 14:12).

Dr. Gelman found it ironic that many people who can't afford health insurance have cell phones, own cars, smoke cigarettes, use illegal narcotics and are obese.
