Dry Eye Syndrome Connected to Dry Eye Hot Spots and Computers

Study Reveals Top 100 US Cities at Risk for Dry Eye Syndrome

Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water talks with Beth Battaglino Cahill, Executive Director of the National Women's Health Resource Center, on World Talk Radio, Voice America, Green Talk Network and Apple iTunes

National Women's Health Resource Center.

On September 29, 2008, Sharon Kleyne, host of the Sharon Kleyne Hour Power of Water radio talk show, interviewed Beth Battaglino Cahill, Executive Director of the National Women's Health Resource Center. The subject was the Resource Center's research into the top 100 United States cities at risk for dry eye, computer eye strain and other eye dehydration diseases. These cities were termed "dry eye hot spots."

The National Women's Health Resource Center runs an extensive women's health website that has won several awards and was recently voted the top women's health website. Dry eye among women is a major concern.

Dry eye in the United States.

Sharon Kleyne noted that dry eye is increasingly common in the United States, due to multiple environmental factors. These factors include dry air, air pollution, stagnant air, and indoor conditions such as forced-air heating and cooling, insulated walls and windows, and working at a computer.

In the United States, an estimated 20 million people suffer from chronic dry eye and nearly everyone experience occasional dry eye symptoms. In China and many other countries, the Chronic dry eye percentage is much higher. So the situation in the U.S. isn't as bad as it could be.

Dry eye hot spots.

The study, Mrs. Cahill explained, determined the top 100 cities with environments likely to cause or exacerbate dry eye, and ranked those dry eye hot spots in order, from worst to best.

Number one (worst) was Las Vegas and five of the top ten were in Texas. Also high up were major metropolitan areas such as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Pittsburgh and Phoenix. In California, Bakersfield, Fresno and Sacramento ranked ahead of Los Angeles and San Francisco. The Pacific Northwest was mostly absent from the list, as were states with low populations such as Wyoming and Maine.

Sharon Kleyne observed that Las Vegas is dry, dusty and stagnant from the desert and also has lots of cars. When you go inside to escape the heat, you are subjected to forced-air cooling, which also causes or worsens dry eye. The same is true in Texas. Cities like Chicago and Atlanta are on the list simply because they are polluted and crowded. New York City ranks a little lower because it has mass transportation and less heavy industry.

Dry eye symptoms.

Most people, according to Beth Cahill, don't recognize dry eye symptoms. If your eyes are frequently uncomfortable, you find yourself repeatedly purchasing dry eye products or you work at a high risk profession such as a computer operator, she recommends having an eye doctor check you for chronic dry eye.

Left untreated, chronic dry eye could damage your eye's tear and oil producing glands, or it could permanently damage your cornea, all of which could lead to other eye diseases, impaired vision and blindness.

In women, dry eye syndrome can be aggravated by hormonal changes in menopause, over or under-active thyroid, arthritis, Sjogren's syndrome, lupus and more. Many prescription medications can cause dry eye.

Nature's Tears® EyeMist®

Sharon Kleyne pointed out that Nature's Tears® EyeMist® is an all-natural, pH balanced, bio-compatible water mist that provides instant supplemental moisture to soothe dry eye. Nature's Tears® EyeMist® may be safely applied as often as desired and should be used frequently in high risk dry eye situations or when working at a computer.

Mrs. Cahill and Sharon Kleyne agreed on the need for everyone to drink more water to defend against dry eye and computer eye strain.
